The attraction of European Football is overrated as a motivating factor for people to stay. In football its money and status. If a big club comes in for any of our players and manager 99% certain they will go. 

Football fans seem to have some misty eyed notions and forget that Football is THEIR JOB and like all of us we move for the best remuneration and security for our families. European Football is a minor shiny bauble in the whole scheme of things and one that invariably results in two games out on your arse. What person in their right mind would knock back the financial security of a life time in "the hope" of maybe four European games instead of two.

its incredible how shite St Mirren have been over the last 45 years yet they have 3 Trophies in that time and we have **one. ALWAYS a huge source of annoyance to me so its Option A for me.

So you be happy with a season of eye bleeding shit fest football, in a relegation dogfight, with below average players and coaching staff, to get 3 or 4 good draws against some diddy teams and get lucky in a final. Yes we win a trophy but we are still left with the shit football and relegation fights for the 10 or 20 seasons after that till our next lucky season comes round...aye ok then.

Improving the club and team etc  year on year is the way forward then we have more chances to win trophies and as a bonus we dont have to watch the shite we have been used to in recent seasons.

Yeah I would . Playing shite football isn't forever as we are witnessing but a trophy win is and if anyone doesn't think we will play shite football again one day is delusional.

I was talking more about a team where everything just gels, players loving playing, fans are loving watching and everybody is having a blast.

It's a rare situation, and one they should savour.

Of course they will want to get more money and status etc. but enjoying games and winning can be quite enjoyable too. Can you imagine what a slog it it would have been for JT if Blackburn had quadrupled his wages and he went to play in a team struggling for points?

Don't underestimate European football though. Just because a few fans are jaded and would rather play Clyde at NDP at the start of the season, I guarantee plenty of players would enjoy it - and fancy their chances of making it to the group stages.

Much like SOD, who despite having international caps, and played in the Euros, would still love to play for us at Hampden in the cup.

Nobody says players and managers wouldnt enjoy European football  but if you are offered life changing sums of money European football wouldn't matter a fuck for 99% of guys who have a chance to secure their family's lives. 

Think about your own job if you are offered 10 times your Annual salary are you gonna say no cos you like the team you work with. It's their job and of most are sensible enough they see that. 

Look at Tony Watt, the number of Motherwell fans who said he should have stayed with us as he could possibly got a Scotland call up. Bet he's glad he ignored that chance and signed a three year contract worth £750,000. Same with Jake Hastie we heard all the stuff about he should have stayed with us where he was guarenteed first team football and develop. He took the £750,000 contract from Rangers and should be made for life despite his career going nowhere. He made the right choice.

Oh there nowt better than loving your job but very few of us would let that stop us increasing our take home 20 fold. 

I'm sure Stuart McCall enjoyed his time with us more but the contract Rangers have him will have soothed his concerns. Slight difference for guys who are already very wealthy, they have the luxury of being picky. Anyone on our books is not extremely wealthy therefore are extremely unlikely to stay for the love of it or a European game.

 I doubt the wages on offer at Motherwell to players and staff provide the financial security that would enable anyone to refuse a huge uplift.

Hastie is the classic example. I wonder where he would be financially if he had stayed put?  Maybe still at Airdrie having been released by us and needing a second job to make ends meet. As mentioned above, he made the right, safer choice.

Like every one on here I hope Askou and our top players and coaches are here next season. But I am realistic enough to understand they will look to move on if/when the right offer comes along. It would only take one poor season for their value....and those job offers... to return to previous levels. Let's enjoy what we have when we have it and pray that any replacements continue the amazing progress that has been seen this season.

Correct and certainly a European game or two would not be a huge influence on decisions anyone on our books has to make if a big offer and big club comes in.

I don't know Jake hastie but doubt he would make same choice again..possibly he never really had it but he did have something for a short spell.  Any time I saw him after that he was below average,  so maybe should've stayed, if you're good enough you'll get your move.

Can't be good for your mindset to be sub for Airdrie after playing in Premier.

I might be in the minority but if we're getting offered upwards of 5M for Maswanhise come the summer get him on the first plane there he's a good player but at 23 he's still extremely raw and I highly doubt he'll replicate his numbers this season again anywhere else.

No way the club are turning that kind of money down.

Its our model after all.

We take it and invest modestly in the next Maswanhise.

It also takes any pressure of taking low ball offers for any of our other players.

"Meet the valuation or bugger off!"

This summer is going to be an entirely new experience for us as a club. One where we are not just clearing the decks to try and get rid of the deadwood, but trying to hold onto as much of this squad as we can, whilst at the same time not standing in the way of players career development.

The only hope is that Jens is still the guy overseeing it and we are not looking for a new manager as well.

Open goal is worth the watch this week, Motherwell mentioned throughout but primarily from about the 1hr mark. Quite interesting stuff considering it’s hosted by Ferry and Slane. Good to hear Jamie Murphy’s thoughts as well and he even mentioned the legend that is Jim Gannon.
