  1. Ironically against the same team as today , and on penalties, Liverpool also won the league that year and Leeds got promoted Hopefully an omen

  2. I'm not sure it's an age thing I wreckon I'm one of the younger posters on here at 30. But I just like our traditional kit and wish we took a bit more pride in it.

  3. This is where I'm at. I simply don't know what to make of today's announcement. All I know is that there's more to this than the official statement. Its fair to say that moving abroad for work away from your family is a big decision and MW would have known this when he accepted our job. Previously he'd also expressed an interest in the Bristol Rovers vacancy. That said, I know nothing of his personal circumstances. From P & B it seems that the vacancy he's filling first occurred about 2 weeks ago. It may well be that he was unsettled before that, I don't know. It does seem strange though that he applied for or was approached for the job and landed it in a day or two. All thats as may be. He's gone and we very quickly agreed compensation. I'd like to know though when the club first learnt of his unrest. If it was a week or two ago you'd think that we'd begun preparations for this eventuality. Where does that leave us? Some good posts on P & B about this. The timing is not ideal but when is? I don't know when pre season starts, but would like to think we'll have a new man in place a few days beforehand. However, we're in a relatively good position. We're financially sound; our Premiership place is safe for another season; Lennon Miller's departure should earn us a few quid; the transfer window opens in a good few weeks time; and the squad doesn't need a complete overhaul. Brian Caldwell is in post to take care of administrative matters and Nick Daws will know of the types of player we're looking to bring in and individuals we're tracking or to whom we're talking to. The release list will have been finalised and players spoken to. I get that holidays may disrupt the search for a new man. But, yes, things should be moving along. As for replacements? None of the names being bandied about for vacancies in Kilmarnock or Dundee enthuse me. There is no standout candidate; just recycled names from the old boys club. We need to take our time and undertake due diligence (this time) but have someone in place a week before pre season.

  4. I know what you mean, but the hoop and/or band has only been used on about 50% of our kits in our history. Even when I started watching us around 1970, we only had one hoop season until 1984. Our kit in the 1925-26 season looked like this: I'd be OK if we did that as a tribute 100 years later.

  5. Leaving in mid May isnt leaving us in the lurch. If he left in July then we would be fucked

  6. Genuinely very sorry to see Michael Wimmer leave. I believe his appointment was a bold and positive move by the club and there were signs that it may have worked out well for us. I liked the way that he seemed to want us to play and he came across as a very decent man. The circumstances of his departure have been explained to us and seem both reasonable and understandable. As such, I can only wish MW all the best for the future, especially with any family issues, and thank him for his efforts in keeping us in the top division.

  7. Aye, obviously if we're finishing third then we've won loads of games and this is no bad thing. But in terms of just a straight choice between Europe and a trophy, a trophy please... Naturally, I would settle for either...

  8. You are 💯 spot on I would say Importance of course is being a top flight club for me After that Scottish cup first League cup second Finishing in a European position third I confess to being jealous of other teams walking round Hampden with a cup in the last 15 years or so. I will finish this by saying well done Alan Burrows and Aberdeen . Saved us from listening about the talk of another treble . A guy who I went to school with

  9. I feel differently these days. Most of us have seen Motherwell in Europe. The number of us to have seen us win a trophy is getting smaller all the time. If you offered me third place next season or a league cup win, it's the claret and amber ribbons every time. But that's maybe just me...

  11. Better hope he doesn't cross paths with Anthony Stokes any time soon.

  12. Don’t really care too much about league cup. Would be nice to win it, but for me, it lost a lot once they took away the European place.

  13. The actual transfer window doesn't "slam shut" until 1st September, so from that perspective there is plenty of time. Most of the players are off for a fortnight in Ibiza at this point, so the ideal timing would be to have a new man in place early June. There is a risk the league cup group stages might be a complete write-off as new players and new ideas are put into place, but more important that we get things right going into the new league campaign.

  14. I think David Healy could be worth considering. He was close to taking the Raith Rovers job so is obviously interested in managing in Scotland. He has done a very good job at Linfield and whenever I’ve seen him analyse Northern Ireland matches he comes across very well. It’s the type of left field appointment we could make.

  15. You’ve clearly lived a very sheltered life if that’s your take here. People should always look after number one; not their boss or anyone else. Integrity means nothing in the context of commitment to your employer vs that to yourself or your family. I do what’s in the best interests of me and my family over what’s in the best interests of my employer, but that in no way means I am negligent or shit at my job. To the contrary in fact. I’m as pissed off as you are about Wimmer leaving, but life isn’t as black and white as you seem to be suggesting.

  16. Why would compensation be minimal he was our clubs manager, signed up on a permanent contract, just starting to rebuild the team for a new season. Motherwell FC invested a lot of time , effort and trust into this guy then he is more or less poached to another club. Family problems fair enough but to have a job lined up as soon as he leaves , starting immediately , well that doesn’t happen overnight does it. Stinks a bit. We now have to reorganise all our future plans , the direction the club was going with him and our signing targets . Then start all over again to find a new manager when two of our direct league rivals are doing the same in the same market place.. He's left us in the shit . We should be getting quite a bit of compensation to cover all this I would think. But it is the real world and we are Motherwell after all . So we will probably come out of this looking like a caring ,compassionate and understanding club , which in the cold light of day the whole thing will have cost us a lot.

  18. I agree. I don’t think anyone can ever call such appointments a mistake, although there should be recognition that there is a big element of risk involved, but that’s football. And that risk has unfortunately come to fruition. On your second point, I would say that he absolutely took the job knowing it could be a short thing for him to boost his CV. We’ve all done it. I’ve moved to a new post, promising them at least 3 years of service, when I was absolutely planning on using it to get me into another post elsewhere as soon as possible. It’s annoying when it happens against your interests, but it’s normal. Next…

  19. With hindsight I can see how it’s being discribed as a mistake . Why oh why would his family decide to stay in Germany rather than move to Lanarkshire ? that part is always a bit of risk. As a club we’ve got a decent record of brining in an unexpected candidate . Over the years Butcher , Mcall ,McGhee , barroclough , gannon, brown , Alexander . Don’t think any recall any being obvious . we need a bit of stability and ideally one who’ll stick around for a bit akin to butcher , Mcall , Robinson .

  21. Nick Daws comes in gor a lot of abuse on here, I'm sure most people couldn't pick him out in the street or have an idea what he does. He doesn't sign the players, that's the managers, he has come up with a few good ones too including Slattery who might be the next one to make us money. Unless MW has tidied things up, a boss sooner than Later would be preferable. Is there a list of released players yet?

  22. Yeah, I'd agree with this, although I'll also contradict myself and say I liked the 'Jester', 'Ajax' and 'Sash' strips. My gripe is when they dont use the badge and use just the typeface. I love our club crest - A thing of beauty. Anyway, I'd love us to get something closer to the 86-87 strip:

  27. Always a risk when you appoint a foreign manager or sign a foreign player especially if they've got a wife and young family who haven't moved with them. At the end of the day family always comes first second and last.

  28. No one of note has wanted this job since Alexander and there are three bigger jobs in the same division that are open. Hope the club has got a great pitch lined up.

  29. Well I think the current model of massive player and management turn over every season is a bit broken for a club with our finances. I don't know if we pay loan fees or how much salary we pay to loan players but as an example is bringing in Dom Thompson to play in Ewan Wilson's position really a great financial decision? Or wasteful and failing to develop our own player? Just one example were I think we are basically spending money that doesn't need to be spent and doesn't really show a joined up and long term view. I mean how many on loan full backs have we had in the past few seasons?
