  1. A wonderful night of European football and one I'll remember and cherish for years to come. Freiburg were the best team I've seen at Fir Park since the 1960s (I wasn't at the Dortmund game). Although clearly well off their normal standards, they were a joy to watch. They had technical ability in spades, and were much faster, fitter and stronger than us. It was men against boys. Even if they are well below their normal standard, like tonight, they'd easily beat any team in Scotland. I would have taken a 3-0 defeat at 7.30 and was overjoyed to see us score an early, well worked goal. What a moment that was. A 3-1 reverse was a decent outcome in the end. I thought they were so good, and completely dominated the game. Given that its very difficult to assess just how good or bad we were. I thought the referee was very poor and inconsistent and said to my cousin early in the first half that he had a red card in him. Fortunately it was only one. Freiburg were lucky to win the penalty as there was a clear handball in the build up just in front of us. But thats neither here nor there in the great scheme of things. I thought our most impressive spell was after Moormann was sent off. We dug in and limited Freiburg's clear cut chances. I do like the look of Hodge and Palmer-Houlden. It was also great to see SOD on the pitch again. My main worry was just how poor we were at defending set pieces for example at 2 of the goals. Domestic opponents will have been taking notes of that. AJ commented on that and it needs some soul searching in various quarters to address. A final word about our fans. There's been much criticism of the Bois behaviour but I was proud that a few of those around me tonight showed a sporting side when they applauded Freiburg players off the pitch.

  2. Now I understand why they weren't joining in with "stand up and sing for Motherwell"

  3. Our guys did their absolute best and gave everything last night and it’s no disgrace to lose to a side that were simply better than us. I for one am really proud of them. Freiburg are a big physical and very athletic side who are able to play at a really high tempo. Remember they are last season’s beaten UEFA League finalists and they beat current Conference League winners, Crystal Palace 3-0 in a pre-season match. The only side of our game where we fall short and did so last season was that we lack that physicality. Never the less when you look at the teams the other Scottish clubs got it’s fair to say we got the hardest. However it’s not the end of the world and we now need to try and get back in Europe again as it’s the only way to get better at this level. COYW.

  4. That's a bit of a wild take from "social media footage". First hand accounts tell a different story - bottles being launched by the Freiburg fans, which prompted retaliation. Questions do need to be asked of Police (and I use the term loosely) Scotland about their decision to allow both "corteos" to pass within yards of one another - details of both were widely publicised so adequate policing and alternative routes shouldn't have been a problem. Even allowing both to be in close proximity, there should have been sufficient police to "kettle" on or other, looked like there were about 2 police woman escorting the Freiburg group. Long winded way to say - we're quick to condemn our own, but it's not always as clear cut as made out.

  5. The issue tonight was that we simply faced a side who were better than us. I also fear we may be keeping Maswanhise..................he s just a waste of a jersey at this point, WTF has happened to him

  6. Im sure the vast majority of the people who sit in the " new seats" in the pod are not looking for any form of compensation as they would still have to sit in the seats. Personally as an ST holder in the pod all i want is the club to acknowledge that they fecked up big time on this issue and get it sorted ASAP then we can all sit comfortably again.

  7. It is far too early to judge Vogt. Higdon is the obvious example but I could name two more at least who had very uninspiring debuts butwent on to do well with us. Lukas Jutkiewitz ( excuse spelling) Debuted at Aberdeen under Gannon. He was slow looked unfit, the ball kept bouncing off him. Remember how he turned out? Louis Moult Debut at Inverness under Baraclough and looked completely lost. Bullied off the ball, lacking a physical presence. H just looked out his depth. The other debut striker that day impressed more. Was it Wesley Fletcher ? Remember how the two of them turned out?

  9. If we ever manage to get everyone fit, I think we have done a good job in recruiting the new defence.

  10. Should be easy to identify so a nice wee stadium ban hopefully. Getting fed up with the very small minority who cross the line. All clubs have this problem so not just us. I will focus on the 8500 genuine fans last night that created great tifos.....great singing.....lovely car horn...etc etc STAND UP AND SING FOR MOTHERWELL.....HONK HONK

  11. Gutted. That was a 1-1 at best, 1-2 at worst sort of game. They’re clearly streets ahead of us, but we didn’t deserve that final result. What can you do, though, when you’re up against a team like that, an appallingly biased referee and some utterly crazy VAR interventions?! Game over.

  13. That will be one of my abiding memories of the game. They treated us with total respect as if we were prime Barcelona. Their movement on the ball was terrific and a joy to watch. Off the ball they worked tirelessly to close us down and possessed the physicality and athleticism to regain possession. We simply couldn't match them. That was no slight on us. I hope our younger players, and there were a lot of them, were watching and learnt lessons and also that our backroom staff took cognisance of their levels of athleticism and conditioning.

  15. ........ and also when they didn't have it. Their appetite to recover possession was immense and contributed hugely to the suggestion from some that we "retreated into our shell". We didn't, we just simply couldn't get control of the ball long enough to mount attacks. A big, very athletic team, who popped the ball around with confidence, always moving (reminded me a bit of our own team last year, minus the big and athletic bit ). Absolutely no disgrace to go down to a team of that calibre. Loved that we were able to celebrate a goal, that at least had some significance in the game and not a "consolation" - what a "bounce" that was.

  16. Morning after and that 3rd goal still hurts but nothing but pride in our players last night and shift they put in plus playing with no fear and the passing game. Great seeing SOD back and once we are at full strength we will be just fine. Hodge looks a player and big Seb up front exactly what we need and allows Maswanhise to play wide. Early days but new signings have fitted in great, the 3 defenders all look excellent and paulsen slotted in great though definitely gives you scary moments with ball at feet. Hodge and Lowry slotted in great and big Seb plus Williams once back will be great additions. Poor Willy the only one not done much yet but let’s give the lad a chance to settle. That early goal and celebrations will live long in the memory as will the car horn in the cooper stand. I didn't realise Harpo Marx was a well fan. Honk honk ! 🤣🤣 STAND UP AND BE PROUD TO BE A WELL FAN!

  17. The goals lost can be blamed on defending all day but let's be realistic. The first was a header from an experienced, 6 foot plus forward with 51 caps for the German national team. That, coupled with the delivery would be difficult for any team in our league to defend. The third the guy was given a free header unfortunately but by that point we were down to 10 and done in so I'll cut the boys some slack there. We held our own against a superior team for large parts of the game last night and were well in it in the second half. Disappointing result of course but we can be proud of the performance and the effort the boys put in for sure.

  19. Genuine question, I take it that'll be another fine for the wee c.c.c character who came on pitch? They can't let the players / fans have their moment, they've got to be the " stars" of the show.

  20. Disappointing to lose a goal at the death as 2-1 sounds much better than 3. But they were a quality opposition, streetwise and miles ahead of even rangers or celtic. So we can be proud to give them a fright early on and that it took a soft penalty and red card to break us down. Moorman has been excellent but that was daft. I even thought at the time the striker overran it - needless to say so did he and took the opportunity to go down easy. Also, not sure which one of their players was reffing the game but he was f**king shite. I thought the WC set the tone for not awarding fouls for minor contact and diving but obviously not 🤷‍♂️

  22. All well and good. But their players were constantly grabbing shirts, coming thru the back of their opponents and committing technical fouls and went largely unpunished. If the ref gave all of those and booked their players as well, Id have no complaints.

  23. We gave it a go but in reality we were well beaten by a much better team, after scoring a brilliant goal after 2 minutes we never looked like scoring again for the next 94 mins, to be honest Paulsen kept it respectable. The 2nd goal was a stupid action by Moorman a stonewall penalty, but how var thought it was a red card is beyond me, the officials and var were very poor tonight. A 2-1 defeat would have been a very good result , so the 3rd goal with the last action of the game was a right boot in the baws. There is no disgrace in being beaten by a much better team, Freiburg are a class above anything we will face in the premiership this season, Ginter is a world cup winner with 51 caps for Germany . So half time in the tie, 3-1 down and one of our key players wont be going to Germany, we still have a chance, albeit a very slim one so i hope we enjoy it and live the dream for 90 mins.. After we beat Helsinki, it was 4 trophies to play for but this week has been rough and i expect the trophy chase will be down to two by next Thursday.

  24. If not for the penalty/red card decision we could have realistically held out for a draw. That said Freiburg were better than us in every department and I was actually a little disappointed in our performance when we were on the ball. Obviously we are playing a team a lot better than most of our domestic opponents but there was still too many passes going astray and some poor decision making. Outside of the goal I don't remember doing anything of note attacking wise. I thought we defended the 18 yard box well enough and the keeper had a good game but the midfield was basically overwhelmed for most of the match and the forward going players were working off scraps. Missing Priestman is a big blow to us and without him our midfield doesn't quite have the right balance. To put it in context Freiburg have an annual turn over of £162 million and we have an annual turn over of £7.2 so that is the scale of the task we had tonight. Ultimately we were competitive but at the same time I didn't tink we were at our best tonight so it's a difficult one to judge but there are levels in football and we as a club just aren't operating at the same level as Freiburg.

  25. Up until the red card it was between Paulsen, Moorman and Lowry. I went with Lowry, getting better with every game.

  26. While disappointing result, we were playing the Europa league runners up and a team that are almost worth 20X the amount we are worth. We are also missing key players and still bedding in new players and new manager. Looking at the bigger picture I think it looks very bright for our season ahead. Hopefully we can go over there and play well and get a decent result.

  27. Soft penalty. Obvious dive from slight contact. Expected a red and they eventually gave it. The officials were biased towards the bigger team and some of their decisions would make Collum blush. Overall they are a better team, but once we scored we retreated into a shell and stood off them. One or two just never got started. The defence is stronger this year. Strange saying that after losing two goals from cross balls. Going forward is a struggle. To many easy back passes to goalie as those further forward are not offering for ball. Again i am not having this hoof it down the park aimlessly. Giving the ball away cheaply. Front three need to do more. JT is an imposter. He has blistering pace, but it seems he is holding back. Carrying an injury? Or not interested? We missed Priestman today.

  28. Sorry but that is just wrong, he was tracking back and making tackles all night, but unfair to say a waste of a jersey. He will come good again, just needs to score. He needs to be out wide and not in the middle that is where he plays best

  31. Just watching some of the social media footage from last night. Looks like there was a bit of a skirmish in the town centre as a few of our Motherwell stone island throbbers took exception to the Freiburg fans march to the ground. Some of these wee tools are an embarrassment. hope this doesn’t have a negative impact on the Well fans going and doing the same in Freiburg.
