MJC, I have a huge amount of sympathy with what you have to say here and the game you mention was a perfect example of a Motherwell manager talking us into defeat before a ball was kicked.

Our record against the OF is terrible and it is slightly depressing when you see our own fans just accept it and defend it as being just fine.

What I would say is that when you see how poor our record has been over the last couple of decades, it makes it all the more remarkable that both Robinson and Baraclough were able to change the narrative, if only temporarily.

Our league is heavily weighted in terms of the OF, there is no doubt about that and when you see the meltdown that occurs when another Premiership team goes to Celtic Park or Ibrox and dares to even draw ( as per Killie on Saturday) then you can tell that beating the OF is never considered part of the script for any team .

I think I read at the weekend that Ross County have never beaten Rangers. If that is true, it shows just how heavily the cards are stacked.

You just never know about this weekend. I think we deserve just one headline, marquee result this season. This just might be it. We have to dream.

Our record against Rangers is worse than Ross County's. We've played Rangers a total of 278 times , RC have played them a total of 21 times.  We haven't taken 3 points off Rangers in the league in 21 years, that's 56 games, that's nearly treble the amount of chances RC have had in their winless 21 games against Rangers.

Personally prefer that the Well Society keep a majority share of 51%. Happy with any outward investment up to that point. That way we can, in theory, stop any decisions we dont feel are in the best interests of the club. Whether any investor would accept that or not is another matter.

In reality we aren't going to get major investment without ownership. Playing devil's advocate here.  So if we stuck to the fan based model and couldn't retain our SPFL status cos we couldn't compete with clubs who have ownership investment would you change that view ?

  3. I see it's being reported St Johnstone are in the final stages of a take over by an American businessman. Im just curious if Motherwell were subject to decent investment take over but it required the cessation of fan ownership how many of you would go for it?

Apart from the goal - and I’m not defending him at that as I’ve still to see it properly - I thought he didn’t do too badly today. He cleared most of the crosses put into the box.
Most, if not all the guy’s we can afford will have faults.

Every player we ever have will have faults , it's the consistency with which they display those faults that determine whether they are any good for us and for me Mugabi makes too many basic errors. He's not alone we have quite a few we should be looking to move on.

We are such a frustrating team to watch. We do so many good things in a game and then feck it up by doing some really stupid shit.

We defended well as a team today for tge most part. Hearts have some gifted players and we kept our discipline well and made them play round about us.

The only save Kelly had to make in the first half was McGinns header which he was trying to deflect over the bar.

Second half we started really smartly on the front foot and put them under a fair bit of pressure. There were a fair few chances to get the ball in the net but we couldnt take any of them.

Ultimately we paid for that. Hearts made some positive changes. Vargas being the pick of the bunch. He looks a dangerous player.

That said the first goal is typical of our season. Straightforward free kick and we let the best striker in the league get a free header at it. I like Mugabi, but his one job in the team is to win headers and he let Shankland get the better if him.

The second goal is a sucker punch in injury time. We were throwing everyone (even Mugabi) forward. Thought SODs was pushed in the back in the run up. Maybe he should be stronger, but Decine got given a foul against seconds earlier for literally nothing. There is no consistency with these things and it makes a mockery of VAR.

Overall, decent performance at a difficult venue. Spittal would have made a difference. Hope whatever his issue is it isnt serious and we see him next week. We will need him.

Not sure what more SK can do about our defending. Team were clearly well drilled today on their gameplan but individual errors keep costing us. Just need to tough it out until the summer until we can change personnel.

Mugabi , should be one of a few shown the door in the summer. He's had tons chances to improve and he makes the same basic error now he did three years ago.

We were never getting 3 points today against high-flying Hearts, and by the sounds of things, we made it easy for them with their goals. It also seems we engaged kitchen sink mode at the end, with Bair, Ferrie, Obika, and Mugabi (according to the radio) all playing up front. Is Kettlewell starting to panic, or is that his plan B? I don't know; I only followed on the radio.

We have three games across seven days coming up. Celtic (H), Livi (A) and Rangers (A). How many points will we take?

    One

  7. Now that my annoyance has subsided , it's just as well we didn't play that game when it was originally scheduled as we'd deffo been pumped.

We'd have take a point before the game kicked off. However I don't take away the criticism of the abysmal collapse. That Aberdeen team are poor so we should have been able to see that game out. Dreadful, not for the first time game management.

Just reinforces that this squad for the umpteenth time doesn't have what it takes. Yeah periodically they can do it but consistently they have the same basic failings. Thankfully most of them are out of contract in the summer.

A big clear out is required and frankly I don't accept the "who will we get that's better arguement" that's what the managers paid for. That's his job.

I agree. Said that at the time. The first foul to be commited after the taking of the corner was the defender with two handfuls of Obika's shirt. They seem to have taken the whole period from the corner to the goal (remember the ball even left the penalty box and came back in) and picked one of numerous infringements to chalk the goal off.

There's certainly mileage in that arguement.

Looking at the carnage in the box after Paton scored, you knew they'd find something. They could just as easily have chopped it off and awarded us a penalty. Farcical, right enough.

They didn't need to look very hard it was clear as day Butcher shoved the Aberdeen player , the arse.

  10. 3 hours ago, wellfan said:

VAR may be a scourge on the game, but we've only got ourselves to blame tonight.

Yep Butcher playing like a school by pushing the Aberdeen player and getting our 4th goal chalked off. What goes through his head, he knows VAR will see it if the ref doesn't, clown. The Aberdeen player wasn't even getting near the ball without the foul.

  11. 2 hours ago, Chanzeypopz said:

Agreed, Surprised Miovski didnt score tonight, He has been banging them in for fun lately

Aberdeen are that decent they lost 3-0 at home to St Mirren, they are 9th in the league after 25 games, Aberdeen are pish , they have conceded as many goals as us this season, they have  a quality striker and very little else.  Shocking to lose a three goal lead to that Aberdeen team.

Well I got rinsed on here for suggesting that Kelly was one of our highest paid players.

I certainly think he will be the highest if not one of the highest paid, what that sum may be I don't know but my point stands he's replaceable at a lower cost to the club.

  13. 22 hours ago, grizzlyg said:

Nope. That's why I don't think we could agree a new contract with him

I'd move him on. He's infinitely replaceable at a lot less than we are paying him. Ive heard folk say

"if we want a chance of Euro money he needs to play for a chance of being picked,  if he's dropped there is zero chance of being picked".

I don't really go for that because the amount of money isn't earth shattering, so I'm rather perplexed why he isn't dropped.

  14. 3 hours ago, grizzlyg said:

I think Kelly's problem is where would he go? I think he would struggle to be first choice elsewhere in SPL or down south.  On a big wage so if he didn't sign a new deal I wouldn't be too bothered but also if he did re-sign I wouldn't be upset either but I feel would need to be on reduced terms which I would not expect him to sign which I couldn't disagree with

Would you take a pay cut when you had a bad year??

Our next run of games hardly fills me with enthusiasm in terms of us picking up points.

    Aberdeen (a)

    Hearts (a)

    Celtic (h)

    Livingston (a)

    Rangers (a)

    Aberdeen (h)

I think this run of games will determine whether we’ll still be in the top flight come the end of the season.

I think 4 from that run , max.

My first season was 1963 (unfortunately I missed both  St John and Quinn). It's very, very  difficult to gauge relative levels of playing excellence or even competence over the last sixty years (gulp!)  but we were very poor when relegated in the late 60s (watch the YT vid of our defeat at Dens Park that year for example) and when we spent three years in the second division (along with Hearts). Can't imagine what people would have said then if there had been social media.

No point in listing the many lows and disappointments since then  but I was given hope by last Tuesday night's victory and still think we will scrape up this year. The whole of Scottish football is circling the drain, though, mainly because of the perennial incompetence of our footballing authorities and the colossal finanncial imbalance in the UK caused by the huge amounts of money pumped into the game down south, including gambling industry money (which I find  particularly  disgusting since it exploits the most desperate in our society).

Given that, I'm not sure what kind of quality  players we can afford to attract to a fan-owned club of about 4,500 hard-core fans without some rich investor chipping the odd million in. It can work for Hearts because they have a large support but we're trapped like many in an economic bind. Best we can hope for short of a Sugar Daddy is unearthing a Turnbull or Milller  occasionally who will then be snapped up for relatively small change when the time comes. Loanees are a short-term option which  may tide you over  but can bite you on the bum, as we saw with Mika.

Perhaps after about forty years in the top flight our time has finally come and the bullet can no longer be dodged but I don't actually think so. I appreciate that  the brave souls who travel from far away may be close to breaking point after so much disappointment and some of it may be age-related, although I have two neighbours in the POD who remember Baldy Shaw and Andy Paton and they  still seem up for it. Admittedly, they are locals and I doubt I would be travelling regularly down to FP if I lived in Perth or Inverness and we all have to decide what's worthwhile for us and our families.

Living in Hamilton, I'll be there next year if we go down, if only  to avoid going around Asda on the weekly shop or watching endless re-runs of Midsomer Murders on the TV. Also, I hear the  FP chicken chasni pies are good, although at my age I don't think I'll risk them.

I think wellgirl's positivity has rubbed off on me too. She seeems to have  been through a lot for a a young person already yet still shows great commitment both to her studies and the club.

Keep the faith if you possibly can, dossers.

    You could support West Ham......

The club is indeed fortunate to have fans like you that still have the enthusiasm. Thankfully in the small support we've I would consider myself in the minority and for the clubs sake hope it stays like that. Even if we had 12,000 more of them every week would we be any better off when you look at Hibs and Aberdeen over the last few years.

The Scottish game is going nowhere because there is no genuine competition. How's it managed to survive this long as a two horse race ever year is truly astonishing.

We've been to 4 cup finals in the past 20 years, which is good going for Motherwell, historically speaking. And our league record over the past 3 decades would equal that of most eras. No happy clapping involved, those are just facts.

You are not wrong and I fully get why those who stick with it do and I'm not trying to piss on their parade. If they still love it as much as they did 40 years ago I'm genuinely jealous. I'm at the stage and have been for 5/6 years where I find it all intensely tedious and predictable and 90% of the time it is predictable. It's not just us that it affects most of the clubs go through the same ups and downs. A league devoid of any real competition and excitement. The product is crap.

Where the club are guilty is the constantly depressing whinging about being skint, we are the worst whingers in the league. Clubs like St J , St Mirren , Killie and Ross County are  not significantly better off than us financially but by Christ we are world beater at griping about it. I never started supporting Motherwell to concern myself with the clubs balance sheet every year. I feel that's all we exist for is to keep the finances in balance.

Anyway I never stared this topic to depress everyone , for those who still love it all , good for you and I hope it stays that way for you.

I've been going to Fir Park since the late 50s and haven't lost my enthusiasm. I still get annoyed at defeats but am no longer surprised. TV has changed the game irreversibly and its a small, very small  consolation, that it's nothing to do with me. I'll continue to support MFC come what may.

The club is fortunate to have guys like you , guys like me not so, I'm at the stage after unstinting support for 46 years I'm sick to the back teeth of it. I could walk away tomorrow. It's only habit that keeps me going and the great people I have gone to games with. If they gave up I'd finish tomorrow. I stress it's got fuck all to do with the Morton game. I thoroughly expected that result. I've felt like this for 5/6 years now.

Yep i agree with a fair few of you i been going for around 45 years now to Fir Park i am nearly 50 years old and i am at the stage where i am so bored of the club it just feels like groundhog day more so last couple of years its been terrible.

Now i make a round trip of nearly 70 miles,i dont drive so i am at the stage where do i really need this, the x amount i am spending could go on something else  and the big question is would i really miss it alot enough to care.

This has nothing to do with the fact we got beat by Morton as someone said above used to its nothing really new its more so this season i look at the quality on the pitch and there is nothing to get me excited, not one player i want to turn up and watch.

So i shall be reviewing the new chairman and new ceo  watch over the summer what they are going to do moving forward and if i like what i hear see some progress then i shall turn up and if its more of the same then think it might be time to watch from afar sadly.

You are a better man than me mate , I only travel from EK to Motherwell. If I had 70 mile round trips I think I'd be done.

Not the worst player he ever signed. Shivute's double at Ibrox in a 2-2 draw was worth signing him for.  He was a bit raw and sometimes ran the ball out of play, but he was nowhere near the worst player we've ever had or even the worst signed by McLeish. Even when he signed decent players he made shit deals for them.

"Sometimes ran the ball out of play......" You are being very generous mate. Shivute was crap but we've got plenty to choose from, Billy Davies brother for one. Worst manager ? Without doubt Maurice Malpas followed by Bobby Watson, Harri Kampman then McLeish. McLeish generally did well initially because he inherited Tommy McLeans team then set about rebuilding it and his dealings in the transfer market were horrendous. At least Malpas, Watson and Kampman had the excuse of no money to spend. McLeish wasted the £1.75 million we got for Phil ODonnel. Equivalent of £4 million in today's money.

Good call Grizzly. You can add Vale to that list too as he's looked good in his 2 cameos. As always  Aberdeen will prove a hard physical test

Aberdeen won't even need to try , if they remain patient we will as near as put the ball in the net for them. It's been our Achilles heel for long enough , the standard of goal we generally concede is frankly a joke.
