  1. Fans are becoming more and more impatient when comes to giving time for players to develop (and coaches to develop them).

Watching players develop over the course of a season is one of my favourite parts of supporting a team like ours. I shouldn't be surprised when fans complain about a new recruit after 2 or 3 games, but sometimes it feels like they have no idea about the game - even though we have countless examples of players that turned out to be good (or great) after months of good coaching and first team exposure.

There's always lots of chat about how we need to give youngsters a chance, yet guys like Bair and Slattery who were 22 and 23 when they joined us are expected to be at their peak, despite accepting Motherwell level wages.

Of course, there are times when it doesn't work out. Even players with bags of skill and potential can fail; especially when they aren't prepared to learn (looking at you Dom Thomas), but there's needs to be a bit more realism when it comes to recruitment.

It's different when we are signing a 27 year old, but when we are signing players with only a season (or less) behind them it's never going to be about instant success.

And having written all that, I know nothing will change and 2 or 3 of our summer recruits will be written off as useless by September.

    Absolutely brilliant weekend so far

Both beat in the same weekend , can’t get any better than that and a Hearts win doesn’t affect our league position at all

The Aberdeen result was pretty hilarious too.

I can't agree your assumption. If people are members they must be more engaged than people who are not just by the sheer action of joining. If they didn't care that wouldn't be members. Before anyone starts I'm not suggesting non members do not care but this discussion is about people  people who are members and couldn't be bothered to vote I really find it beyond credible WS members didn't know there was a vote happening.

Maybe they didn't care one way or the other.  I don't remember seeing an "Either" option.

Aye but he gave control to a Muppet

That's pretty standard in the club ownership business. The other model is for the owner themselves to run it into the ground.

  5. I wasn't that surprised in the turnout. When the Society was launched, I recall a lot of members saying they were joining to support the club, but had no real desire to participate in the running (which is fair enough).

I was a little surprised by the nearly 2 to 1 vote in favour of giving up ownership. Unless we find some generous benefactor who isn't expecting much of a return of investment, it feels like the road to a new Morrison's and an Excelsior Stadium ground share.

Boyle just about killed us off, and he was a fan.

Whichever way you frame it, 6 wins in 28 and 2 early cup exits is a poor return for any manager. He likely wouldn't be here now if it hadn't been for his secret extension.

Lucky he had that secret extension then or we could have had a Warnock or Levein making no difference whatsoever to our performances.

James Scott is truly shite. It’s a sign of how appalling our season has been if we are a dozen or so points below a team with Scott and mandron as their strikers

We're 3rd (joint) highest scorers in the league. That's not the root of our problems.

  8. The SPL and now SPFL were set up mostly to benefit the OF.

SPL was created with 10 teams to guarantee 4 OF derbies a season. The splitting of gate money was changed to "home team keeps everything" to ensure the OF had proportionately more income.

The top-heavy weighting of the 1st and 2nd prize money was created to ensure the OF received the most cash the majority of the seasons.

And let's not forget how the authorities wanted to keep Sevco in the top league after liquidation. Even after the fan protests they went against their own rule book and kept them in the league despite the precedent set by the treatment of teams like Gretna.

So it's not completely unreasonable for any team to mention the disparity in resources when we come up against them. We are literally playing against a stacked deck every time.

But it's football, and in single games, points can be won against them - and winning them is sweeter thanks to the same disparity. The fact that both sides are supported by many small minded bigots just adds the pleasure when we do win.

Unfortunately for  us, the fan ownership (which I am part of) has slowly dragged us down. Why?

The "why" is because John Boyle ran up massive debts as an owner/investor. While he didn't call in all that he was owed, he did leave us in a bit of a state when he gave up his holding. One of the reasons we ended up as fan owned was because JB couldn't find a buyer for a club with our problems. As he had put us into administration it meant the club couldn't get a bank loan (for 10 years as I recall) which, even for wealthy investors, is often a requirement for running a business.

Whether you like the man or not, we were lucky Les was around to fund us and steer us in the right direction for fan ownership otherwise we could have been floating around the lower leagues by now - or worse.

In fact, if you want to see the dangers of a single investor, Boyle is a great example - a fan, a businessman, and a guy who wanted the best for the club, but still managed to nearly kill us off.
