  1. A fair summing up. Win, lose or draw, our players will know they've been in a game come Saturday evening. We're due some refereeing favours after the last 2 or 3 games, but very rarely get them against Aberdeen.
  2. Is it Yorky? As far as I know, the clubs have to agree a compensation figure within a certain period (2-3 months??? I suspect it's expired)and if they can't it goes to a tribunal. If the Lewis Ferguson case is anything to go by its a very secretive process in line with the "undisclosed fee scenario.
  3. Any updates on the Jake Hastie compensation saga or of David Turnbull's offer of an extended deal?
  4. Don't forget too that Kipre's fee will fall into the 2018-19 accounts. Agree at the moment there's no pressure to sell.
  5. In that instance, Christie walked off the pitch injured but was then promptly sent back on to lie down to waste time as the sub wasn't ready to come on. I've never had the impression, maybe wrongly, that he's a dirty player but 4 red cards may suggest otherwise. I do however recall that he has previous for diving and that annoyed me.
  6. Well deserved call up for the big man. He's been very consistent this season and is a better footballer than many thought originally.
  7. A completely unexpected aspect of the game for me. Despite packing their defence for much of the first half Saints managed to win a surprising number of corners; 9 to our 2. Pre match I expected us to have to aerially bombard a packed defence at set pieces etc but for a long spell, with a few exceptions, we struggled to get anywhere near their penalty box to either win corners or put in crosses. In short first class defending and the way in which I'd like us to see out games in the last 15 minutes or so when we're winning but on the back foot.
  8. He was complimentary to him on the radio but said that he needed to be more aggressive around the penalty box and fire off more shots on goal.
  9. It was great to win a potentially very hard game. Very easy to see how St Mirren have conceded very few goals and their defence, up until we scored, looked as solid as I've seen from a team this season - defending 40 yards out from goal. There's lessons for us to learn there. They were toothless up front though as expected. It was always going to take something very special to defeat them and Scott and Long produced the two necessary touches of magic. Hladky in the St Mirren goal was an absolute standout and it was a real shame he had to end up on the losing side. Enough about Saints though. We thoroughly deserved the 3 points and played some great football in the process although our defence was very shaky at times. It was encouraging to see us play patiently until opportunities presented themselves. We're currently third in the league....on merit. Gillespie again had a very good game and made some crucial saves. Gallagher was again solid at the back, and we needed that. What about his run to the by line? Campbell again had a great game doing a lot of the spade work in midfield, but my man of the match was Polworth. He sprayed pass after pass about and provided that special spark. As ICT fans warned us though he's no goalscorer. A real footballer. Barry Maguire slotted in well and despite some errors grew into the game - good to see him take his chance. Scott was good in flashes and what a goal! Long too looked impressive when he came on and took his goal well. It wasn't all plain sailing though and I thought St Mirren had far too much freedom down our wings. Both full backs struggled a bit defensively but Grimshaw's trademark surging runs helped in part to compensate for his defensive frailty. As one or two posters have said, I thought Hartley had a poorish game; letting his man get just too much space at times and getting caught out. He made up in part though with some do or die tackles/stops and that caught the eye of many. Up front, I just didn't see what Cole offered. We still lack an out and out striker and although we scored two goals, all too often there was no focus for our playmakers. In short, we played very well although there are still some weaknesses that better teams would exploit. The positives far outweighed the negatives today. John Beaton had a reasonable game although he had no major decisions to make. It was interesting that he didn't show a yellow card for a dangerous head high boot by a St Mirren player and no doubt Jake Carroll would have been an interested observer. Not a dirty game, but Danny Mullen, as on his last visit, didn't endear himself to the home support with his theatrics and tantrums. Good to be sitting third tonight tonight - well done to the management and players.
  10. Polworth was my choice but Campbell and Gallagher were also very impressive.
  11. I'm glad Willie P is included. That said I'd hope the likes of Hughie Ferguson, Willie McFadyen, Bobby Ferrier and George Stevenson will be inducted very shortly. Real giants from our past.
  12. Hopefully no red cards, penalties conceded or muggings please. Is that being unreasonable?
  13. Yes, it will be a far tougher game than many anticipate. Saints will not be coming to Fir Park to entertain us they'll be coming for a draw and will sit in. They have an excellent defensive record bettered only by the top 2. Their big problem is at the other end where they're not scoring. Hard to beat sums them up. Its not looking like James Scott will be renewing acquaintances with Gary Mackenzie and he'll be very glad of that. Who'll replace Donnelly? Maguire maybe but don't rule out O'Hara or Sloth. I think physicality and height will be important here if we're expecting to lay siege to St Mirren's goal for a large part of the game. In that respect I'm glad we've got Declan Gallagher. Hopefully we'll be able to win a large number of corners, to allow our set piece advantage to kick in. A close game in prospect and one for the purists I suspect.
  14. It might seem odd Andy, but they were two slightly different games from our perpsective. Against County we certainly did create several chances but so did they, and in fact they could have been 4 goals up by the 15 minute mark. Our defending was patchy - good at times but very poor at times. Against St Johnstone, we created few chances the goal and Cole's miss being notable but Saints created a fair few and fortunately missed the lot. Again our defending was poor at times. We're still giving teams too much room and time in and around our box. One similarity I would pick out though is that we've had rotten luck and poor refereeing in both games. I look forward to the day when our luck changes.
  15. I had to make do with watching BBC Alba yesterday. As far as the Donnelly incident goes, I've watched it on several packages but still can't make my mind up about it, as its not clear. Our players weren't at all happy at the ref and surely if it was clear cut decision they wouldn't have reacted in the way that they did. The ref didn't see it and the nearest official was over 40 yards away. The tackle on Seedorf? Having seen it on the SPFL highlights package I agree with Fizoxy as its a matter for the Compliance Officer. High and deliberate its a straight red. We'll see though. A typical St Johnstone game where they outfought us, tried to nullify us, gained a nothing penalty, and we had a man sent off. How predictable. This time though we ground out a result and won ugly. St Johnstone, had the bulk of the pressure, probably deserved to win but lacked a killer touch up front. I thought our midfield were outfought (not surprisingly) and the two full backs struggled. We gave Saints far too much room in and around our box and looked disorganised at times, but fortunately they just couldn't score. Apart from a few efforts ie Cole's miss, we didn't really play an effective counterattacking game and were hustled, harried and knocked off our stride, as usual in Perth. Hartley and Tait look way off the pace. Plenty of positives though. We did win ugly and gain the 3 points. Thats good to know we can grind out results. Gillespie had a great game, thank goodness, and Gallagher my MOTM, was a colossus (Casagolda's term on P & B). He provided the assist for Cole. He wins virtually everything in the air and is a real threat at set pieces. Polworth too looked good. I'm always happy when we beat St Johnstone as they really are an annoying team just now. I don't like their cynical play acting.
  16. Agreed. It was interesting that in the first half, there was a hip high studs up challenge on Seedorf by Ralston and a similar challenge on Polworth, both not dissimilar to Carroll's 2nd yellow card last weekend. For the first no foul was given and for the second a foul was awarded but no further action taken. Interesting too that just before Cole netted, that Davidson hauled Donnelly to the ground about 4 yards out. Had we not scored would the ref have awarded a penalty?
  17. Just watched the highlights on MFC TV. Not the best view of the incident it has to be said but the referee didn't see it, as he seemed to running/facing at right angles to play. I'm not convinced it wasn't an accidental collision. Maybe BBC highlights will show it more clearly. As for the penalty...an absolute joke of a decision as any contact would have been minimal. Murray Davidson can dish it out as we all know but he goes down very easily for such a physical player. Its high time commentors called out simulation/play acting/conning for what it is. Certainly scope for the Compliance Officer to cite him I'd say.
  18. Thats now 2 weeks on the trot we've suffered from poor referees and potentially game changing decisions going against us. Not seen the Donnelly incident yet but he's not a dirty player. Suspect there was more to his red card than meets the eye. Usually these type of incidents are the culmination of ongoing "niggles" and weak refereeing.
  19. I used to work beside an Irish boyhood friend of his who now follows St Johnstone. He always referred to him as "Tom". I just picked that up I suppose.
  20. He was seen at Fir Park last week at the Ross County game. Presumably spying on us.
  21. A tough one to call. St Johnstone haven't hade the best of starts to the season so far as they are without a league win. That said, they've had a tough run of fixtures. They're usually well organised, hard working, combative and streetwise and I doubt if that'll change tomorrow. Their defence though has been a bit suspect especially when they open up. Add to that our recent record on the road at Perth is pretty poor. Tom Wright watched us in person last week and will be well aware our shortcomings. Our squad is perhaps more suited to counter attacking, so you'd hope that our style is compatible with this fixture. Right now our biggest weakness is in defence. I'm not convinced of either of our likely full backs defensively and that'll place unnecessary and unwanted pressure on our central defence and goalie. It also means that Donnelly and Campbell, if they play, will need to step up their game to counter a very abrasive and competitive Saints' midfield. I'm not sure about Hartley now but we can rely on Gallagher and Gillespie. Will Mugabi be thrown into this one? I want us to play a classic away gameplan; sitting deep, restricting Saints to long range efforts from 40 yards out and making very few errors. If either of our full backs is taking a roasting in the first 10 minutes (as has happened regularly at Perth) then I hope Robbo responds by making a quick change. No high balls above chest height for the strikers. If we can do all that we'll take at least a point from this game.
  22. Official site reports that Charles Dunne will be out for 3-4 months following groin surgery. David Devine is also out for 6 weeks.
  23. He's a thoroughly decent lad and a true Well fan. Good luck to him.
