Hadn't watched Cardiff City for a few weeks, but saw Turnbull wasn't even on the bench today.

A quick google shows he is  "facing 'long-term' absence after surgery" after he suffered a hamstring injury. Never great, but even worse for him give that he had established himself as a first team starter this season, and was turning in some good performances.

Its a real shame seeing whats happening to his career. Had really high hopes for him, particularly in a Scotland context as it was clear he wouldnt be with us for long. I always wonder whether players with poor injury records is down to genetics or whether playing a lot of football from an early age is actually bad for the body?

Blair Spittal scoring again for Hearts today, to give them a 2-1 win.

Apparently it was a pretty decent strike as well. Looks like he might be finding his feet at last.

Probably helps when they start him.

Most games I've seen Hearts play this season, they've kept on the bench for the first hour.

Ive been quite perplexed by Hearts this season.

Both Spittal and Dhanda were some of the top performers in the league last season and they didnt seem to have any plan as to how they were going to use them.

Critchley looks like he is starting to get his head around what he has in the dressing room.

Hopefully he hasnt quite got it worked out by 2nd January!

An interesting thread on the 2016 Scottish Youth Cup winning team:

https://x.com/kaigwatson/status/1874007225674719282?s=46&t=wehikD-exiutCByWu64YEQ

Really interesting piece.

Just goes to show how difficult it is to make it in senior football.

Clearly our best youth team in many years and although a few got into our first team and are still playing at a decent level, only 3 would really be considered as having been really successful.

A handy reference to have when we are having debates about pathways to the first team and whether managers are supportive of young players or not.

As I've said before, I can't think of any young player we have released that ended up playing at a higher level than us.

And even the ones that chose to leave for "better things" (rather than be punted) have mostly struggled.

Max Johnston is the rare exception in the latter category, and even Turnbull (after a good initial spell) has had a downturn in fortunes.

I think that we normally get it right in that respect but I would like to mention Nicky Cadden as one that got away.

My mate who knew them as players was shocked at us only keeping Chris as he believed Nicky was as good if not better but it has taken Nicky longer to get to where he is now.
Tough decisions for the coaching staff when budgets are tight and I sometimes wonder who they put before him on their list.

Butland injured so baptism of fire for Kelly tomorrow . Certainly don't wish him any bad will. He was not great last season but was a good servant to us

He played last week against Dundee

Aye but Butland got to touch the ball. Kelly as usual nowhere to be seen at a cross ball. How he makes a living as a goalkeeper is a mystery.

I think there's a bit of revisionism going on because during his first loan spell, and during his early performances after we signed him, he was an excellent performer (and even won the players' Player of the Year).

He was certainly poor when everyone else in the team was poor too, but his overall contribution to the team during his spell was a net positive.

I was never a fan of having him as a captain, and I always felt his form dipped after that.

I've seen plenty of good keepers over the years that don't do crosses - it wasn't a problem for them, because they had central defenders that took care of them.

Jim Leighton made a career out of never leaving his 6 yard box, but had guys like Big Eck to mop up.

Kelly became a bombscare and cost us a lot of goals, absolutely no denying that especially after he became captain. As been said previously  he was very good on loan to us and initially after permanently signing but he just got worse and worse , every other team and even his own defenders knew he couldn't be relied on at cross balls.

That being said the Ox seems to be heading in the same direction. Hopefully he can recapture his prowess In the air he's a lot bigger and has more presence than LK ever had.
