Since this current format for the LC was introduced in 2016 we have been drawn against Premiership opposition in all bar one knockout tie. And outwith 17/18 we have won just one of them. I cannot see that getting any better in Paisley in a fortnights time.

Our luck with Cup draws is absolutely ridiculous, particularly in the League Cup.

Our luck with Cup draws in the old format used to involve drawing teams like Queens Park in a two leg tie and losing 4 - 1 at Fir Park.

By the time the groups have played out and you reach the last 16 there is about a 50% chance on average you'll draw a Premiership team if you are seeded and nearly a 100% chance you'll draw a Premiership team if you're unseeded.

The opportunity to play the "lesser" teams is baked into the composition of the groups. It's just the nature of the competition these days.

My favourite format was the single leg knockout approach where every match was decided on the day (or night) and the final was in November. That avoided the meaningless group games and made it worthwhile for away fans to turn up.

Considering we squeaked into the seeded spots it's very disappointing we didn't get a Partick Thistle or a Raith Rovers at home.

Oh well.

Raith Rovers would send half this place into meltdown.

Oh well.

We never sneaked into the seeded spots, we did what we had to to win the group and get a seeded spot while other teams failed to better our record.

Not the best draw we could have had, but not the worst either.

Rather play on grass than away to Killie or Livvy and the journey to Ross County is never enjoyable.

Short travel distance should ensure a decent away support and the extra spice of all the ex Motherwell connections.

Hopefully Obika is fit and we can see whether he or Mandron is the better player.

A perfectly winnable tie for either side.

A few of us suspected that it would be either Killie or St Mirren away and so it turned out. Its time we beat St Mirren in a cup tie again!

As an aside, at Dens Park yesterday, there was 1 less substitution than in our game and the same number of second half goals; don't know about injuries though. 5 minutes added on. The SFA needs to clarify this unsatisfactory situation and introduce some consistency.

Let's be honest, a game against St Mirren is just going to be like our upcoming games against teams like them in the league.

We could go out and win 3-0 while looking amazing or could get cuffed 3-0 and look terrible. Or anywhere in between.

It's a coin-toss really, and it's what keeps things interesting.

18 years since we last managed to knock them out of a cup. That was a 2-0 win after extra time at Love Street in 2005.

Since then we’ve lost our last four cup ties against them. The 3-0 gubbing at Love St. in January 2006 when they were in the lower leagues, the loss by the same scoreline at their new ground in the league cup in 2009 under Gannon and the 4-4/penalty defeat in the Scottish Cup at FP just before lockdown in 2020 still give me nightmares. We also lost a SC replay in Paisley in 2009.

Our ex players  team are nothing to fear, would have preferred to play them at Fir park but we can go there with confidence of getting a result as they are nothing special.

That said I think it will be a tight game its got extra time and pens all over it

If you read their social media threads St Mirren fans are supremely confident of disposing of us. Id love to know what their arrogance is based on.

Probably based on them finishing top six last season, and us losing our best young player and best striker we've had in years, while replacing them with underwhelming names.

Not that this means St Mirren will win, but let's be honest, we're not looking great compared to how we finished last season.

They nearly threw the game away in the second half today but they do look a good team so I can see where their “arrogance” come from.
That said I also think that, on the whole, we have a team capable of knocking them out if things go our way.
