Aberdeen v Motherwell league cup game

All Cup games are must win.

Unfortunately we as a team are incapable of winning games and as a club we don’t have the bottle to go to one of the bigger sides grounds and dump them out of a Cup*.

I reckon 0-0 or 1-1 after 90 minutes followed by an ‘agonising/unlucky’ loss AET or on penalties. We’ll no doubt play some nice stuff in the middle of the park, miss some chances and if we do manage to score we’ll chuck one or two in for them.

Whatever happens we will lose on the day.

* Yes, I do know that we won 1-0 up there in the ‘91 Scottish Cup run. 34 years ago now.

2 teams that can't win a match. Something's got to give. I would rather win the league game if it came down to a choice given Celtic and Hearts and Rangers still in cup.

I wouldn't worry about rangers,  think hibs are more of a worry

Theres four other teams at the moment who have only won one game. The only teams who are performing right now are Celtic and Hearts.

*quite aware it's not good enough before I get called a JBA apologist *

Your quite right to point that out.P ositive post. We're not the worst and there is positives. We are unbeaten of course.

We are also not alone throwing away points. Dundee Utd giving up 1-3 lead at Hibs to end 3-3

the teams are really really close this season

Not a happy clapper but can I just point out we have yet to lose a competitive game this season. Yes some frustrating results but jeez give me this style ahead of the dross we were served under previous managers. I really like JBA and I am sure we will progress under him.

Genuine question for those who seem the most concerned about 5 draws.

Assuming our points were same after 5 games would you prefer that it had been based on 1 win, 2 draws, and 2 losses?

Eg  not inconceivable that games played out differently and we lost to Rangers and Killie (were down in both games)

beat Hearts

drew StM and Dundee

Not sure if you class me as one of the folk you’re talking to but given the five games were Rangers(H), StM(A),Hearts(A), Kilmarnock(H) & Dundee(A), then probably not in previous seasons but given the percentage of possession we’ve had in the games and the nature of draws where we’ve failed to add another goal or even hold on from a winning position, then yes I am concerned at - what I perceive to be - the amount of points we’ve dropped.
Having said that I’m not panicking, more frustrated.

I don't think that the main issue; in any event its academic. Whats more relevant is the manner of those draws. In probably 4 of those games we've been the better team, should have won but yet failed to win any of them.  That and the fact that we've drawn 3 games on the trot having taken the lead. Today we had 16 shots at goal compared to Dundee's 7. However they managed 4 on target, the same as us. Thats been a feature in more than one of our games. The words "frustration" and "concern", but not "panic", sum up the thoughts of a few, including me.

As Ive said elesewhere, I think a big problem next week could be injuries.

With Koutoumbis, Welsh and Stama all going off with some sort of pull/tweak/injury on top of the others we already have (McGinn, Hendry, Slattery, McGhee, Sparrow) then we could be severely limited as to the team we can put out.

Hopefully some of them are just minor/precautions and it wont look as bad as Im projecting.

Probably is but we just need to get on with it. Not the only team with injuries just now

Yes, we do need to get on with it. You're right in that other teams do have injuries, but are their lists as long as ours? Dundee, for example, had 2 players out last Saturday. By my reckoning we had 8 players out.

Its starting to look a lot like last year.

Hopefully it doesnt spiral down into the shitfest that ended up.

We are starting from a much higher water mark though, so Im hopeful we will be alright.

Begs question again.

Is there something wrong with the trainning methods, physio, club infrastructue, lack of monitoring niggles or anything else that we have had a horendous injury list the last three seasons.

Six games in , It cant be bad luck again. Could it be a problem with boots design nowadays.

I Suspect every club in the country has the same issue Dave but nobody evers hears about it.

Football is a contact sport so players will pick up injuries whether during a game or training or even playing with their kids on their days off, and the teams with the smaller squads will be impacted the most,.

So for me there is nothing to see here, no conspiracy, dodgy training methods etc its the result of engaging in a contact sport.

I think its just load.

The game is getting quicker and the close season is getting shorter.

Our teams used to finish mid May and start back mid August.

Now they finish the end of May and are back playing League Cup mid July.

I know players live very different lifestyles now, but their bodies must still need some rest and recuperation.

Im sure JBA said as much in a recent presser.

The early start in the League Cup certainly doesn't help as it interrupts the coaches' ability to put together a progressive training plan.

I have heard various managers say that nowadays, their team doesn't get fully match fit until 2 or 3 months into the season.
