If it was an improvement fair enough but I’m not at all convinced by Stephen Welsh. He’s a player I was always happy to see playing against us.
Celtic have been trying to punt him for years and their penny pinching prevented that from happening.

I'll be disappointed with Welsh if correct. I hate loaning from any team in the division. It's not as if we're needing because of last minute injuries. We have been crying out to sort the defence out since at least January. We have brought in one player who can play there and he's been crocked from Day 1. We should've been looking out with before now. We can't rely on Ward and if he is to be persisted with he needs better cover.

They must see something in him. Although he’s been on loan they must still be paying some of his wages so if he’s that bad with no chance of a return they would have punted him for next to nothing unless his wage is so high he’s decided not to leave without a payoff.

You know what they are like though they are notoriously bad at transfer dealings. They’ll be sitting there with their biscuit tins out and lawell is like Arkwright from open all hours. (Sorry for the younger viewers, most folk over 50 will get it)

he’s a big unit of a lad tho but he comes with a bit of an injury jinx. Anyway if he appears let’s hope for the best. Trust the process in the words of Russell Martin

Where would you put him with  Gordon and Balmer?

Which is the correct question. Let that sink in!

As a youngster he's played a decent amount of Euro football with Celtic - decent with feet and in the air. He will do fine for us - viewpoints on loans from other clubs in the league aside, I think OTF is doing him a disservice.

I'm not a big fan of loaning players from the same league but welsh almost certainly doesn't have a future at celtic so he might be one that we could get permanently down the line.

Contracted with Celtic until 2027 and reportedly on £8k a week. Doubt we would match that and the player would be crazy to give up a years salary at that level to join us permanently at the end of this season.

I'm guessing Celtic hoping he does well with us this season so that they can sell him elsewhere for decent money at season end. They are keen to move him on but nobody is willing to meet the fee demanded. Scared Mechelen off.....twice. Yet another example of Celtic signing players on daft wages and then finding they cannot hold down a first team place or be moved on. Trusty on £30k pw, Engels 15k, Yang £10k as other out of favour players with years to run on contracts. Hilarious how poor their transfer dealings have been. Everyone is not a Virgil VD it appears.

I would rather we looked elsewhere for a player on a permanent basis but it could be we are struggling to secure anyone Askou regards as suitable. Still time but this is might be the only upgrade we can achieve. I hope not, but I think Welsh might improve us. On that basis I can live with him joining us.

Just been on wiki... I know, I know you can't always trust it but surely he has played more than 72 games in 6 years....

It reports

42 for Celtic between 2019 and now

19/20 played 15 for Morton

And 17 for Mechelen last season.

He signed a 4 year contract in 2023.

He seems the type of player that is happy to sit and take a wage or is seriously injury prone which is why we are attracted to him.

His injury history..

In July this year he had shoulder trouble with a potential need for surgery

August 2023 ankle ligament injury  8 weeks out and day after he signed new deal

Even with the few knocks prior to that nothing adds up to a longer layoff than 8 weeks (info collated from a couple of different websites)

Ain't it funny. Cries of get a cb in and when we apparently do, it's cries of not him! Perhaps our first choices failed to materialise.

Is he better than Balmer? He probably is. He is still young enough to develop and I am sure will be fine. Only downside is if he become a fixture in the defence, that defence will need to change against Celtic.

You think our fans would have learned by now not to judge any signing based on performances for previous clubs. We've seen often enough previous form accounts for fuck all with our signings. If he signs it's a signing we need and I welcome him and reserve judgement until I've seen him a few times. Christ Davie Cooper was playing for Rangers reserves when we signed him.

I texted a mate of mine who has a season ticket at Parkhead when I saw us linked with him. His short response was "Sick note. Never seen him complete 90 minutes". Obviously an exaggeration but if his first thought is not about his ability but his injury track record, it does suggest it's an issue...

Remember when we signed Craig Patterson I was told he was no use to us because he was always injured....

As well made pointed out on stats and records, injury's have been short term. I think we should look at stats and records rather than one persons view or opinion.

Same when we signed Chris Porter I seem to remember. High risk because of his dodgy knee.

An upgrade would be a stretch methinks even on Balmer.

I’m against loaning from another in the same league generally, we’d lose the player for 3 possibly 4 games as it stands.

I take your point but if someone was to ask me about Nicholson or various others we've had at Fir Park  my first instinctive answer would be 'injury prone'. Sometimes it's just that your instinctive answer is right. As in Louis Moult or Rolando Aarons. Sometimes not. As is pointed out in the case of Chris Porter as weeyin pointed out...

Just worthwhile having a range of opinions. I'll confess I don't know if he can fill in at left back and with Wilson out on loan, I kind of assumed we'd sign a defender that could play left centre back and also cover Longelo at left back...
