I'm sorry to see Bevis leave but I agree that consistency was never his strong point. On his day he's a brick wall but when off it could be partial to the odd error or two. That said, the back line being shuffled and changed week in week out last season can't have helped any of our defenders. The defence as much as any other department on the park requires a level of consistency in terms of selection. Allowing the players (the centre halves in particular) to forge a partnership and understanding. Much like we saw with Hartley and Aldred, Casey and Butcher before Butchers injury. We need to see a more settled back line next season if anything.

i still think our defensive issues and scapegoats this season were hard done by. Our Goalie hung them out to dry. If you are a defender and go on the park without any confidence of the man behind you it doesn’t end well.

Mugabi is one of those players that often has a really good game and then just makes a catastrophic clanger.

Unfortunately he's never really managed to eliminate that from his game.

Yeah you do have a point, but let’s face it, every single defender in Scotland has a catastrophic clanger in them, hence the reason they play in Scotland.

i think Bevis will go and become a regular somewhere and do well. Just my view tho and I appreciate others don’t feel the same.

Bevis gave 100% every game and came across as a really good guy to have around the club. A very likeable guy who's built like an absolutely brick s&*t house. 

His situational awareness for me was the issue. He wasn't always aware of what went on around him, opposition able to drift behind him with relative ease. Thus his timing was often off, which simply cost us goals an all too often basis. 

To be fair had be been consistent he'd have left the club 3 years earlier akin to likes of Kipre.

Kelly has signed a short term contract so we get the money for him being at the Euros.  Nice one!

This From Uefa site explains why Kelly did the decent thing and signed on for a month. The note at the end explains the difference between Fifa and Uefa when it comes to club payments for players represented in National squads. Fifa go back two years contract wise but Uefa only 10 days. Quite a difference.

Clubs Will Also Earn from the National Team Tournament

UEFA and FIFA have mechanisms to reward federations and clubs — organizations pay teams for players' participation in their tournaments. This mechanism, called the "club payments program," is not related to ensuring players from injuries (for this, FIFA has a separate structure).

The solidarity program, created in cooperation with the European Club Association (ECA), rewards teams for nurturing players. At EURO 2024, teams, including those outside of Europe, will receive €140 million from UEFA, €10 million more than four years ago.

UEFA still needs to determine the amount that will be distributed among clubs. Still, the payout scheme remains unchanged from that of EURO 2020. It will work as follows:

• each club will receive a certain amount from UEFA for each day a player is in the national team;
• calculations start 10 days before the first national team match in the championship;
• once the national team is eliminated from the tournament, the calculation of payments stops;
• after that, all payments for each player are summed up, and UEFA transfers the money.

An important point: according to the ECA, payments are due to clubs for which the player was registered 10 days before the start of his team at EURO (relevant release period). For comparison, in FIFA's loyalty program at the 2022 World Cup, all clubs in which he was listed for the last two seasons received payments for one player.

By signing on for an extra month, he'll earn 4 weeks or so of wages, he wouldn't have otherwise received  plus, I suspect, a slice of the UEFA payment. A win win situation.

Or he could have just signed for Rangers (or somebody else last week), received a signing on fee/salary and let his new Club collect the £100k+ Uefa payment. So yes, win win. But he deserves credit for making sure Motherwell do not miss out.

Yes  credit to him. He could simply have left us. However he couldn't sign for Rangers until next Friday when the window opens. That would have been 2 weeks without pay. I don't know which, if any, club would have been entitled to a UEFA payment until that date.  He'll still get a signing on fee from them. We should be grateful to him though. As I say the arrangements benefit us and him.

Ah, My mistake apologies. Bloody window! As you say, he could have signed for somebody next Friday before the Euros kicked off and guaranteed his new employers a tidy sum. And no doubt himself a wee bonus for going without for that couple of weeks. Let's hope we get out the group and earn Motherwell a bit more.

I still think the Fifa scheme of rewarding Clubs for the 24 months leading up to the World Cup is fairer, and does away with the need for these contrived short term contracts.

If he’s out of contract, he can sign for whoever he wants at anytime, surely? Liam has done us a real favour here, there’s nothing else to it.

Considering what we've been paying him, and what Rangers will likely be paying him, I'm sure he'd have managed during those tough two weeks without pay.

Maybe a payday loan to cover him until that first Rangers wage hits the bank?

I suspect he signed the extension a while ago and not just as a parting ‘gift’.  If he had been out of contract at the end of May he could sign for Rangers immediately, no 2 week gap.  The window is a period for registration,  not for employment.

If a player is out of contract, he can surely sign for another team at any time. But for that player to be allowed to play immediately upon signing, he had to have been out of contract before the previous window closed. Otherwise he must wait until the next window opens before he can play.

Out of contract players have been signing for Clubs since season end have they not? Window or no window.  But not playing obviously. I guess teams sign them up early to avoid players going elsewhere and players will be happy to sign so as to avoid wage gaps. I suppose that also covers existing squad members whose contracts have expired. Like SOD, McGinn.

Yes, Shane Blaney might have been an example for us.  Signed in December but registered in January.
