St Mirren v Motherwell 30/08/2026

So both pundits on Sportscene agree it’s a foul in the lead up to the 1st St Mirren goal. Both pundits agree the missed penalty should have been retaken. The fact that Clancy needed to see the handball on a tv despite having a great view in real time sums up how bad he was. The standard of officiating is at an all time low in Scotland but as usual it’ll be swept under the carpet as it’s not against Rangers or Celtic.

AJ obviously spotted Kanga so hopefully today is a great sign.  3yr deal plus year option so if he comes good then we have a huge asset

Just watched the highlights. Wild that the pen was not retaken. Gogic after the miss is affecting the play and denies Tawanda the ability to get the ball. How is that missed by VAR. Mental.

Not sure about the fouls before the goals. Would have been soft and if it happened to us we would have been raging. 

Some finish from the new boy. Not seen a goal like that in a while.

It's certainly a great start for Jardell and I have little doubt he will develop into something special ✊.

That was a thoroughly entertaining game courtesy of two teams looking to play open and incisive football with a fair amount of quality.

I’m not quite sure what to make of the three goals conceded in nine minutes. We did look lightweight but this time last year I thought we were destined to lose a bundle of goals but went on to achieve a ridiculous number of clean sheets.

I would have taken a draw at 3pm after our Euro exertions and so I'm happy with the result. However, I'm not impressed by the manner of it after having been 2 goals up then losing 3 in a crazy 10 minute spell. That can't all be put down to tiredness. Plenty of positives though like TJ getting back on the scoresheet and our debutant scoring a cracker.  Also a few returning from injury. 

However, we are short of a fit right back just now and I'm not sure our defence has the height and physicality to cope with rivals. Midfield also seems talented but lightweight. Its a young side we have and we seem to lack leadership and experience. 

Early days and our season won't really begin until after next weekend, but  a few concerns starting to emerge.

Watched the game on a terrible feed which kept freezing in a hotel room so when it happened in the 93rd minute I switched off the tablet, got ready and went out for the evening, WTF? Was my thought when I just checked in on here. Happier man now

2nd half though he did make some brilliant saves ( hard to see from other end of the stadium but looked decent ) to keep us in it 

 

some goal from the new boy but before that unconvincing from the build up people were giving him on here from YouTube ( goal was top level though & it’s a difficult 1 to come into some time will tell )

 

mentioned earlier about a right back, got the feeling personally it’s a year too far for O’Donnell, their left winger was decent though 

 

also mentioned another centre mid to take some of the load of fadinger, looked really tired today

As mentioned before, delighted to see Thor come on and get some minutes, I thought he looked sharp and mobile and I hope he can now stay fit.

I thought he had something about him last year and he does give us something different.

if we do lose JT (as much as he’s been very average of late) we do need another striker in. Thor and the palmer lad look fine but Kanga isn’t an out and out striker and AP is clearly offski and Hendry is a chocolate fireguard. And the Less said about Willy the better.

Several people have said to me without fear of argument "Well, the keeper is an upgrade on Ward". I'm not so sure...

Good post and I agree with you. Paulsen is a great shot stopper but too small and poor in the air. Thats why he has no future at Bournemouth. We could cope with that if we had three 6-4 defenders but we don't. A weakness in our recruitment strategy? I agree about another defensive midfielder - someone with a bit of physicality please. As for SOD - a big season for him. Is he past it? Add to that, Sparrow is not a right back.

Im pretty happy with where we are right now.

But I agree our season wont start properly until we get back to one game a week and the manager has the opportunity to get his ideas across to the players on the training pitch on a daily basis.

I think thats why it went from so good to so bad, so quickly today.

We were brilliant, right up to the point we lost our shape and structure, and then we werent.

Its very fine lines right now, with timing of runs and passes so important to whether we attack from a position of security, or leave ourselves wide open to counter attack. Its something that Jens took a little while to get on top of last season, but when we did, it was impressive.

I agree about the lack of physicality in the team though. Not sure what we can do about it at this stage, although I think Olly Whyte has a bit of dig about him. Do we trust throwing him in though and who do we leave out?

The only thing I would say about physicality is the players we lostvlast season were hardly renowned for their physical presence so it's not as if things have changed much

True up to a point Grizzly, but I feel we have missed Stephen Welsh at the back. He is a big lad and no-one pushed him around. Also Elliot Watt is somewhat bigger than Joe Hodge.

Good post Joe. Of course, things are still to settle down and we're still very much work in progress. AJ has still to mould the players into his system. 

I'm not privy to all the detailed metrics that our recruitment team uses to identify and source players but I'd be shocked if physicality and experience don't come into the equation somewhere. Surely a keeper's qualities should dovetail with those of the defenders in front of him? Like it or not, and I don't like it, many other teams will test us out at set pieces and crosses and we have to be prepared for such tactics. 

Years ago, I was castigated on here for wanting bigger, more physical, players in our squad. I had a hard, maybe impossible, task to convince some others that that didn't equal thuggish hammer throwers. Freiburg proved my point. You can be a faster, more skilled but bigger athlete than your opponents.  Usain Bolt was hardly vertically challenged at 6-5 and 15 stones in weight but he was quite fast.  It seems like an oversight in our summer recruitment, which to be fair, seems to have gone well in most other respects.

I think the problem is that to get players that can play the way we want to play, but are physically bigger and stronger, you have to pay more money than we can afford.

We can have good players, or we can have big players. Its a sliding scale with a definite price point.

Out of interest, I looked at our stats for today on the BBC match report.

We won 10 aerial duels to St Mirrens 5 and 17 tackles to St Mirrens 20.

So despite us both thinking we lack physicality, we actually seem to have stacked up ok today.
